Growing up, Alma Castro spent much of her time at her family’s restaurant, Castro’s Cafe. Now the proud owner of the beloved Northern New Mexico eatery, she must balance giving her employees time away when they have a new child, face a serious illness, or experience a family emergency, while ensuring the restaurant has enough staff to keep operations running smoothly. But it’s not always easy. She’s urging lawmakers to pass paid family and medical leave so her employees don’t miss out on a paycheck during these critical times, and so businesses throughout the state can be more nimble and financially secure when dealing with staff leave and shortages.
